Saying Daytona 500 is like saying Super Bowl — even your grandmother has heard of the Daytona 500. She may have even been there and seen it. The Daytona 500, born from races on the sandy Florida beaches, has come a long way from its first running back in 1959, when Lee Petty (the father of Richard “The King” Petty) won the sparsely-attended event and took home the top prize of $19,050. Now the winner earns more than $1.5 million and in excess of 200,000 fans with Daytona 500 tickets will travel to Daytona Motor Speedway for the historic race — an attendance figure that dwarfs even the largest Kentucky Derby. In the early days of the Daytona 500, the race was dominated by some now-legendary drivers, like Junior Johnson, Mario Andretti, Cale Yarborough and Richard Petty (who won an incredible seven times). Then in 1998, Dale Earnhardt finally earned his elusive Daytona 500 victory, the first and only of his brilliant career. The 2004 running is perhaps the most memorable race of all-time, as Dale Earnhardt Jr. won in a stirring tribute to his father, who was tragically killed in a crash on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500.
